Inherent to a Windows operating system is a central database which is called a registry.  The registry keeps track of everything the operating system comes in contact with, either directly or indirectly.  It keeps track of all hardware attached to the computer.  It knows of all the computer users, their profiles, programs they use, permissions they have and what websites they visit.  While this may seem like a long list of duties the registry performs, it is not.  In fact, the registry keeps track of things that go far beyond this scope.

In its normal line of duty, a registry is constantly adding and deleting things from its master list.  A lot of information gets lost in the shuffle of trying to keep a registry 100% up to date.  Somethings that should get deleted do not become entirely deleted and some registry entries become corrupt.  Corrupt entries actually feed the operating system false information.  Keep in mind, this registry mismanagement is not a rare occurrence.  In fact, if you use your computer every day, it happens every day.

After an extended period of time passes, the registry will have gathered enough inaccurate and useless entries that it will cause quite a traffic jam for all the information that passes through it.  In short, this is what causes a computer to become very slow.  Of course, no one is forced into using Windows, but I for one, will not use any other operating system.  I’ve tried alternatives, but Windows is so far superior and easier to use than any other OS, I will choose Windows even though they do have the problem that bottlenecks can form in the registry .  Other operating systems have bigger problems than that!

All you can do to keep corruption and other errant entries out of the registry is use a good registry cleaner periodically.  This will keep your computer from becoming very slow.  In fact, the best registry cleaners include registry optimizers within their software package and this in some instances, will make the computer faster than ever!  Yes, using a registry cleaner is an additional step you have to take if you are going to choose Windows as your operating system, but in the long run it is a very small inconvenience.
