NTFS stands for New Technology Filing System and is used in most of the newer Windows operating systems. Another characteristic of Windows 2000 is that its registry uses five main filing directories known as hives. Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 also use five hive registries. Another such operating system is the little-known Windows NT. This was the first Windows operating system to use the NTFS filing system. Windows 2000 came shortly after Windows NT.

Ironically Windows ME is newer than Windows 2000. However, Windows ME uses a registry consisting of six hives.  It also uses the older filing system; FAT32. This filing system was used in Windows 95, Windows 98, as well as Windows ME.

So the characteristics of Windows operating systems can be broken down into the filing systems they use in the number of hives that compose their registries. Those operating systems that use six hive registries also use the FAT 32 filing system. The operating systems that use five-registries use NTFS filing systems. These, generally speaking are the newer operating systems; namely Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7.

The point to all this is: Windows 2000 is not unusual and most registry cleaners that will clean Windows XP will clean Windows 2000. However, you must always be sure the registry cleaner documentation tells you a particular registry cleaner can be used on a particular operating system before you use it. In other words, you can never be sure.

The insides of the Windows 2000 operating system are very similar to the insides of the Windows XP operating system. One of the big differences between Windows XP and Windows 2000 is that Windows XP has many different sub operating systems that sprung off of the main Windows XP operating system itself. In other words, there is Windows XP home, Windows XP professional and several other options to choose from when you are choosing the Windows XP operating system. For the most part, Windows 2000 comes in two flavors; home and professional.

The Windows 2000 registry, like any other Windows registry, has a tendency to corrupt over time and when it does the computer the operating system is installed on will lose its edge. Sometimes corruption in the registry can cause the computer to become very slow.

Windows 98 registries, and Windows 95 and Windows ME registries for that matter, use a registry system that consists of six main parts. Main parts of registries are referred to as registry “hives.” Windows 2000, 2003, XP, Vista and Seven all use registries they consist of five hives. Therefore, you can see these Windows registries are more like each other then they are similar to Windows 95, 98 and ME. So, you can see there may be some registry cleaners that will not be capable of jumping over the line, so to speak, to clean Win 98 registries when they are compliant with five hive registries.  However, many registry cleaners are capable of cleaning both six and five hive registries.

Back when Windows 95 and 98 ruled the computing world, registry cleaners were not available. Therefore cleaning the registry was an arduous task. Many times, computers would just continue to get slower and slower until they were replaced simply because there was no easy way to clear out registry problems. Registry problems are very common and creep up in all Windows operating systems, even if the computer is very well cared for. In other words, Windows registry problems are just a way of life and always have been.

The bottom line is; if you have an older computer that has Windows 98 and it isn’t running so well you may not be out of luck. Possibly, all you will have to do is install a registry cleaner on the computer and you will bring it back to life again. However beware, computers with Windows 98 installed are usually, absolutely prehistoric. In other words, they usually have an early Pentium microprocessor or possibly a Pentium II with a 2.2 GHz hard drive and 128K of RAM. They may run, or should we say crawl at about 300 MHz of speed. Therefore, a Windows 98 computer system running to all as potential will probably not be what you would be used to if you have been using a computer less than three years old.

Still, a PC with Windows 98 installed, though it may be considered a real dinosaur, can be useful and certainly it will bring back memories. Aside from that, why throw it out when it may be a $30 registry cleaner will revamp it entirely.

A good registry cleaning program can be far more productive than a human ever could be in detecting and repairing a PC problem.  Sometimes it can take a person hours to track down a particular registry entry that is causing a computer to act in an undesirable way.  A registry cleaner, on the other hand can find hundreds of problems, if there are hundreds of registry problems, in just a few seconds.

There are times some folks like to entry the registry manually to make adjustments to the way your computer operats.  Making a tweak in this way to the registry requires running the operating system’s built in program, Regedit.  Then expanding folders until the right folder is found and then changing a number or a code to the file in that folder.  Sometimes instead of a number, a yes is changed to a no.  Sometimes, though I cringe to think about it, a file is deleted.  I cringe because deleting the wrong file can spell total disaster for the operating system!

Someone told me about entering Regedit to make it so his favorites menu would be alphabetized.   Though I don’t know this procedure off hand, I know one would start by entering the HKEY_CURRENT_USER folder which is one of the 5 main registry hives.  After entering this hive I imagine it would require a laborious set of steps to get the favorites menu to be alphabetized.  This fellow admitted it was rather complicated.  I told him if he went to his favorites menu, right clicked on any favorites entry and then chose “sort by name” from the menu, his favorites would become alphabetized.

That is just one example.  For anything you can do by entering the registry there is an easier way to do the same thing through the Windows interface; or as the techie types would prefer saying, GUI.  So, the bottom line is don’t go playing around in the registry to make some kind of tweak.  As far as making fixes to the registry is concerned, use a registry cleaner, it’s much safer and a whole lotb easier!
