Traditionally, improving computer performance meant improving the computer somehow. It is only natural to believe that since the computer has lost speed, something must have happened to the computer. While this may be true in some cases, most times it is not.

Sure, adding more ram and installing a bigger hard drive so your computer has ample room to freely exchange swap files are things that help a computer increase its speed. However, when your computer becomes slow, it usually isn’t the computer itself at fault. Most times it is a problem with your Windows operating system.

Viruses and other kinds of malware like spyware for instance, can cause major problems with your OS and so your computer wilol become slow because of this. Spyware can also do terrible things to your personal life as well because it can rob information about you and your web-surfing habits.

However, the most common cause of a computer performing poorly, having errors pop up on it and losing all or some of its speed is corruption in the registry. Obviously, this corruption needs to be cleaned out of the registry in order for the computer’s problems to become fixed. The only way to do this is to use a good registry repair program, otherwise known as a registry cleaner.

If you are not sure you need a registry cleaner, you can get a free scan and see if there actually is corrupted files in the operating system’s registry before you commit to purchasing a registry cleaner. In other words, if you know your computer’s registry is clean and your computer is slow or not functioning well, you will know your problem is not with the registry. In a case like this, the problem is more than likely spyware or a virus.

Yes, it is important to be free of viruses and spyware but since most people already have some type of virus or spyware cleaner installed on their computers and since spyware cleaners clean many virus types and virus cleaners clean most spyware types, the first sign of a computer slowdown usually signals the need to scan the computer’s registry for corruption.

The smart thing to do if and when your computer loses its speed is take advantage of a free registry scan from a reputable registry cleaner. If it turns out you have a corrupt registry, the solution is simple. Pay the small fee to register the cleaner and use it weekly, or at the first sign of a performance loss. If it turns out your registry is free of corruption, it is time to upgrade your virus/spyware cleaner.

How to clean a Windows registry now, since registry repair software has become available is an easy question with an easy answer. The difficult part is making sure you have the right software to do the job because using the wrong software could actually harm your Windows operating system!

How to clean registry in the old days, like in about 2003, it took a lot of patients and a lot of know how. These were the days before registry cleaners when registry cleaning had to be done by hand. When a computer was having a lot of errors, crashes and/or running slowly and it was found to be free of
and viruses, a technician would be called in to track down the registry problem.

The program a technician would run back in thse days is known as “Regedit.” Regedit is a program bulilt in to the Windows operating system and is accessed from the run command line. Once the technician enters the program he finds a Windows Hierarchal structure that consists of thousands of folders and files. Helping somewhat is the fact these thousands of files and folders used to be broken down into 6 parts. The parts were referred to as hives. Actually, Windows registries are still broken down into hives. The only difference is today there are 5 instead of 6.

It is my opinion, back in these days registries rarely ever were 100% after they developed problems. Usually, all a technician could do was get the computer running again. Often its performance would still be below par. Ah yes, the good old days for we technicians! Back when almost every computer was crashing all the time!

Then came the registry cleaner. A registry cleaner can scan through an entire Windows registry in minutes checking each registry entry on the fly. Checking every registry entry is something a human couldn’t do, probably in a lifetime!

After the registry program is through with its scan it will then go back through and repair or replace the entries it found to be corrupt and just as importantly, it will eliminate the entries that are not needed. The reason this is important is it is the no longer needed entries which have been left over from previous operations that will often make a computer slow.

So, using a registry cleaner is the answer to the” how to clean registry problems” question. However, before you go out and get a free scan with just any registry cleaner make sure you take the advice from someone who has used registry cleaners so you know you will be getting a dependable product. The reason for this is a registry cleaner of an unknown quality may do you no good at all. Even worse, an outdated or poor cleaner could cause you more problems than you have already!

One final note: Don’t use Regedit ever! Not only is it near impossible to fix a registry using Regedit, if you make one wrong entry while using it, it could be curtains for your operating system!

I have concluded there is no such thing as a free Windows registry cleaner. I have done so because after examining the terms of all the free programs I have seen, it is clear that these programs are designed to scan the registry for errors and remove the first 50 incidents of corruption it finds for free. Then, the customer must pay to get the rest of the corruption removed. 50 incidents is not a lot.

So that you will be sure to know the free registry cleaner has cleaned all it is going to for free, the registry software will execute a pop-up on you desktop telling you you better buy their product now! This pop-up has no close button and and it seems to follow you around wherever you surf. To get rid of this pop-up you have to go to the task manager (cntrl-alt-del) and try to close it there.

Have you heard enough? Me too! Still there’s more. To use the previously referred to as free registry cleaner in the first place, you have to register your copy with the company. This means they get your email address so they cansend lots of email telling you it’s time to pay for this free product!

It is also worth taking note that most of these registry cleaners don’t mention anything about being Vista ready which means they are really not up date cleaners and probably don’t measure up in many other ways, either.

The bottom line is; these free registry cleaners are anything but free. In fact, after the first 50 incidents of corruption are cleaned, the cleaner becomes about the most expensive one on the market!

Going without a registry cleaner in this day and age could be likened to computer infanticide. Choosing one on the sole basis of price is not a wise move, either. If you don’t know which registry cleaner to get, try to find a trusted source who will give you a recommendation. Probably this trusted source should be a computer technician or a friend who has used the product.

In closing, a registry cleaner is an important computer maintenance tool because registries in today’s operating system become corrupted for a number of reasons. One of these reasons is adware and spyware and temporary files are being removed from the hard drive all the time and this leaves corruption in the registry. So, to remove this corruption, a registry cleaner is needed. However, as we have learned, a free one just doesn’t cut the mustard!
