The problem, in days of yore, would be that errant entries would be put into the registry during the install process and this would cause computer errors.  Unfortunately, often a computer owner or even a technician would be unable
 to fix the registry and a complete reformat and reinstall would be done.  Even more unfortunate is the fact this is still done today because many people do not know a good registry cleaner will take care of the problem in almost all cases.
