The reason there is nothing to be gained by tweaking the registry is because anything you can do inside the registry you can do by entering your control panel. The difference between the two methods of tweaking your Windows behavior is that when you enter the Windows registry through programs such as “regedit” you are left to face the inner workings of your Windows operating system without any help. Doing it this way you risk making a very small mistake which can turn into a major problem.

We all know “to hear his human” but one little error made in a Windows registry could make your operating system unbootable. It could leave you in a position where the only way you could ever get to use the computer again would be by reinstalling your Windows operating system. Doing this, of course, would erase everything on your hard drive. So, all your save files will be gone forever; unless, of course, you’ve backed everything up.

When you change things in the Windows Control Panel you are working with a graphical user interface. You’re given choices of doing things that are all viable. In other words, you wouldn’t be able to change something that would ruin your computer. You could only change things that would change the Windows operating systems slightly. So why would you want to risk your operating system altogether by doing something you can do while taking no risk? In short, the rule of thumb about tweaking your registry using a program such as regedit is: don’t do it!

Probably, when people refer to a registry checker they are actually referring to a registry cleaner or, at least, some program that will examine the Windows registry whether or not it actually makes repairs to the registry. The Windows built-in program, registry checker, was replaced in later Windows operating systems by a program simply called “scannow.” This program is run at a command prompt. The reason I say this, is because even some paid registry cleaners are not trustworthy. NTFS stands for New Technology Filing System and is used in most of the newer Windows operating systems. Another characteristic of Windows 2000 is that its registry uses five main filing directories known as hives. Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 also use five hive registries. Another such operating system is the little-known Windows NT. This was the first Windows operating system to use the NTFS filing system. Windows 2000 came shortly after Windows NT.

Ironically Windows ME is newer than Windows 2000. However, Windows ME uses a registry consisting of six hives.  It also uses the older filing system; FAT32. This filing system was used in Windows 95, Windows 98, as well as Windows ME.

So the characteristics of Windows operating systems can be broken down into the filing systems they use in the number of hives that compose their registries. Those operating systems that use six hive registries also use the FAT 32 filing system. The operating systems that use five-registries use NTFS filing systems. These, generally speaking are the newer operating systems; namely Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7.

The point to all this is: Windows 2000 is not unusual and most registry cleaners that will clean Windows XP will clean Windows 2000. However, you must always be sure the registry cleaner documentation tells you a particular registry cleaner can be used on a particular operating system before you use it. In other words, you can never be sure.

The insides of the Windows 2000 operating system are very similar to the insides of the Windows XP operating system. One of the big differences between Windows XP and Windows 2000 is that Windows XP has many different sub operating systems that sprung off of the main Windows XP operating system itself. In other words, there is Windows XP home, Windows XP professional and several other options to choose from when you are choosing the Windows XP operating system. For the most part, Windows 2000 comes in two flavors; home and professional.

So, what does Mr. Gates mean by centric and what will it do for us? The word centric is derived from the word center. A centric structure has its main body in the middle and layers form around it which this central body controls. However, the real meaning I get from the way the word centric is being used here is that Microsoft is the central
body.

Tracers

The reason I say this is because Windows 7 uses tracers to keep our operating system running. Whereas Windows used to have you click OK to send a report to Microsoft after a crash, this is no longer necessary because Windows tracers will take care of it. While all this sounds 1984ish, it really is not a bad thing.

If you were to take your Windows Operating System disk and try to install it on another computer, you would not be able to. So, you can see Microsoft has, to some extent been in our homes for a while already. Though this concept may be hard for some of us to swallow, that is just the way it is.

Cutting the Waste

Of course, probably what Mr. Gates was meaning to convey by centric is that the time has come for operating systems to be very, very efficient. In the past, upgrades were built as additions slapped onto the previous operating system.
With Windows 7′s centric system the waste has been cut from the inner to the outer core of the system. This makes it so your microprocessor can do more while working less. Windows 7 has achieved this goal by sacrificing, to some extent, compatibility. In other words, you won’t see too many programs compatible with Windows 7 and everything else.

No Windows Mail!

Window 7 comes without Windows Mail or Photo Gallery installed. However a free download including these two pieces of software and some other niece features as well, can be downloaded for free. All in all, I see this as a plus over previous operating systems.

Some users of Windows 7 have complained it is slow. Actually, this operating system is built for speed but your computer has to have the horsepower to run it. A 40GB hard drive with 16GB of free space is an absolute minimum. Also, you cannot even get this OS off the ground without at least 1 GB of RAM. Microsoft states the minimum speed of the processor to be 1 GHZ, but I would add you need a top Microprocessor with ample L1 cache onboard. In other words, a so-so computer will not run Windows 7 very well.

Still, this operating system has some nice features. Myself, I have been delighted with my Windows Vista system but with we computer users becoming more and more video obsessed, an operating system structured to cutout wasted computer effort is needed. Windows 7 is at least an attempt at designing this non wasteful, centric system.

Description

The Microsoft people have come up with a new version of an operating system in recent months. In an interview to Newsweek, Bill Gates announced this version is meant to be more user centric than previous OS’s. This is a new wrinkle of an upgrade. Certainly, earlier versions of the Windows operating systems were never said to be centric, though in some ways, they were.

The older Windows operating systems, namely Windows 95, Windows 98 and ME all used registries that were split into six different main hives. In fact, as hard as it may be to believe there are still registry cleaners, some of them highly renowned, that will only clean registries in operating systems as new as Windows XP. Obviously, the companies that designed these registry cleaners are way behind the times!

Whether the registry cleaner says it is Windows 7 certified or Windows 7 ready; it really doesn’t matter. Ready or certified really mean the same thing. They mean the internals of the software program will do the job of ridding your Windows 7 registry of corruption and duplicate files and they will add files that are missing from your registry.

One final point is the fact Windows 7 is as prone to collecting registry corruption as any other Windows operating system. Just because it’s newer doesn’t mean that registry corruption is any less of a problem to it. Yes, there has been many improvements made and Windows 7. However, its registry still does collect corruption so it is very important to keep it cleaned out with a good registry cleaner. If you don’t clean the corruption every once in a while, the computer will start become slow and may give erratic error messages and even crash on occasion.

The bottom line is; if you have an older computer that has Windows 98 and it isn’t running so well you may not be out of luck. Possibly, all you will have to do is install a registry cleaner on the computer and you will bring it back to life again. However beware, computers with Windows 98 installed are usually, absolutely prehistoric. In other words, they usually have an early Pentium microprocessor or possibly a Pentium II with a 2.2 GHz hard drive and 128K of RAM. They may run, or should we say crawl at about 300 MHz of speed. Therefore, a Windows 98 computer system running to all as potential will probably not be what you would be used to if you have been using a computer less than three years old.

Still, a PC with Windows 98 installed, though it may be considered a real dinosaur, can be useful and certainly it will bring back memories. Aside from that, why throw it out when it may be a $30 registry cleaner will revamp it entirely.

How is it possible a brand new operating system could be slow? The two reasons we are finding that are responsible when Windows 7 is sluggish are compatibility issues and the iffy minimum requirements Microsoft has set.

New Computer – No Problem

Sure, if you buy a new computer you’re all set, it is those who upgrade to Windows 7 who are finding problems. There are two versions of Win7 on the market; a 32 bit version and a 64 bit version. The requirements are basic, a 1 GHz processor, 1 GB of main memory, a DVD-RW drive, available space of 16GB and a support for the graphics of DX9 with a memory interface of 128 MB.

As always seems to happen, when upgrade a PC that is only equipped with the minimum requirements, you end up getting minimum performance; as in slow! 2.0GHZ is really what the minimum should be to get good speed out of Windows 7 and for the 64 bit you really should be sporting 2GB of RAM too.

Not Very Adaptable

Another issue is the compatibility one we mentioned before. Windows 7 in some ways isn’t as much an upgrade as it is a start over. In other words there a lot of programs coming out that are ready for Windows 7 only. No more Window98/ME/2000/XP/ect when it comes to Windows 7. This is new OS in many ways.

As time goes on, like all Microsoft operating systems, Windows 7 will slow down due to registry corruption. Having a registry cleaner on hand is a wise move. Though many things have changed in 7, it still has a registry right in the middle of it. I guess it isn’t all new.

It is unimaginable there will ever be a Windows operating system that doesn’t have a registry. This is just the way Windows works. Since entries are being written and deleted to and from the registry at rapid speeds. It is impossible not to develop some corruption inside of it. Actually, when you think about it, faster and more powerful operating systems will probably tend to build more corruption then slower, less powerful ones. So, it is as important as ever to have the means whereby you can repair the registry on-the-fly. Using a simple registry cleaner is the way you can do this.

Still, I give Windows 7 high grades. I really just don’t recommend upgrading your current machine to run it. To me, Windows Vista is great for any computer that was released over the past couple of years. I think Windows 7 is the perfect fit for a brand new high power PC with a dual core processor ready to run on 64 bit. Sure, 64 bit! As long as you’re going to be using an OS that isn’t compatible with the rest of the world anyway, go for the big bopper. 3GHZ, 64 bit, 4GB RAM and a Terabyte hard drive. Let it rip!

Runtime errors are very common in PC’s running Windows operating systems. They usually refer to some file or other that is missing or invalid. The 339 runtime error most often references a file called msomct.ocx.

Ocx files are active X files. You probably see this term used a lot a lot in reference to information being blocked from your computer. This is because active X doesn’t only write to your computer; it also receives information from you. While this may seem devious, most often it is not. In some programs, active X is what allows you to scroll your scrollbar.

Browsing the Library

Msomct is a library file that makes Windows able to communicate with Microsoft office. So, when a 339 error occurs, it is an error that happens while loading or using Microsoft office. If an msomct.ocx is missing, it could be because it was not downloaded properly when the operating system was installed. This would be a very unusual circumstance.

Actually, on any newer operating system the file missing would be msomct2.ocx since this is the later version of the file. Yes, re-installing the operating system would fix the problem. However, this would be like changing the engine in your car if one of your sparkplug wires went bad. You don’t need a whole operating system; you just need one library file!

Where did that File Go?

In reality, you probably don’t even need a library file. It is much more likely registry corruption or files that are missing in the registry are causing the operating system to be unable to find the msomct.ocx. The reason this is so much more likely an occurrence is because registry files can be deleted for any of several reasons. Registry files that become missing are an everyday occurrence. On the other hand, msomct files don’t get deleted very easily.

Not to belabor the issue 0of the 339 error but basically, all computer errors occur from similar scenarios. In short, when registry files are deleted, they make it impossible for the OS to find programs; even huge programs they are looking for. So, instead of re-installing your operating system in order to re-install an msomct.oxc or any registry file, it is much more pragmatic to clean the registry with registry fix software.

Cleaning the registry not only cleans registry corruption, it also re-installs missing registry files. So, normally, this is the best way to attack any computer error.

The Wrong Program Altogether

Another possible way a computer could saddle you with a runtime error is if an incompatible program was installed. In other words if a program not ready for Windows Vista was installed on Windows Vista, a runtime error would occur when you tried to run the program.

This is another thing that doesn’t happen very often as most times, the operating system’s installer program will recognize when an incompatible program is being installed and it will refuse to finish the job.

The bottom line is the newer Windows operating system’s registries corrupt very easily. So having registry fix software such as a good up to date registry cleaner installed on your PC can cure and prevent many different errors, not only runtime errors. Let me digress at this point to make the claim the lack of registry attention a Mac requires does not mean they are superior in every way.  In fact, having used both Macs and PC’s in my business and for personal use, I favor PCs by a wide margin.  However, in their later Windows versions, namely Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7, registry problems are likely to occur in them.  When they do, the computer will slow down and become liable to pop up error messages, crash and/or freeze up.

In a very simplified sense, registry corruption is nothing more than pointers that leads to either the wrong place or no place at all.  With the older smaller operating systems the amount of time it took to carry out a few false operations was negligible.

I estimate a registry cleaner would, indeed, solve a runtime error 90 to 95% of the time.  However, be aware of the great deceiver, malware.  Since malware invades registries it can cause the registry to corrupt in such a way it would be prone to runtime errors.  In this case, a regisatry cleaner would cure the registry problem but in a short time the malware would corrupt the registry again causing the runtime error to raise its ugly head once more.

Usually, the XP running slow problem stems from corruption in the registry.  It is not abuse responsible for this corruption.  Registry corruption is virtually unavoidable.  So, the only thing a computer owner can do is use a registry cleaner regularly.  This should be done after a virus and spyware scan, but not necessarily  after every virus/spyware scan.  Usually, you can get away with using a registry cleaner weekly.

For what it is worth, Windows XP home seems to corrupt more quickly than XP Professional.  Though Windows Vista’s registry corrupts more slowly than XP’s, it will develop registry corruption, it is just a matter of time.
