The reason there is nothing to be gained by tweaking the registry is because anything you can do inside the registry you can do by entering your control panel. The difference between the two methods of tweaking your Windows behavior is that when you enter the Windows registry through programs such as “regedit” you are left to face the inner workings of your Windows operating system without any help. Doing it this way you risk making a very small mistake which can turn into a major problem.

We all know “to hear his human” but one little error made in a Windows registry could make your operating system unbootable. It could leave you in a position where the only way you could ever get to use the computer again would be by reinstalling your Windows operating system. Doing this, of course, would erase everything on your hard drive. So, all your save files will be gone forever; unless, of course, you’ve backed everything up.

When you change things in the Windows Control Panel you are working with a graphical user interface. You’re given choices of doing things that are all viable. In other words, you wouldn’t be able to change something that would ruin your computer. You could only change things that would change the Windows operating systems slightly. Of course, this is all you are trying to do when you tweak the registry manually. However when you’re working in the registry manually you have no reference point. Changing a file that should include the letter C to a file that includes the letter D instead could be catastrophic! Whereas changing anything in the control panel only lets you make choices that will do no harm.

I’ve seen articles online telling you how to alphabetize your favorites menu using regedit. Alphabetizing your favorites menu by working in the control panel is very easy. So why would you want to risk your operating system altogether by doing something you can do while taking no risk? In short, the rule of thumb about tweaking your registry using a program such as regedit is: don’t do it!

Probably, when people refer to a registry checker they are actually referring to a registry cleaner or, at least, some program that will examine the Windows registry whether or not it actually makes repairs to the registry. Of course, a registry cleaner actually checks the Windows registry as well as repairs problems it has found.

The Windows built-in program, registry checker, was replaced in later Windows operating systems by a program simply called “scannow.” This program is run at a command prompt. It is not really very helpful because it reports errors it has found but actually requires technical skills to repair these errors.

As one who has repaired computers for over 10 years now, I advise against using free registry cleaners or, any tool that is made to install onto your computer and can be gotten for free. The reason for this is many free programs are laden with spyware. Sometimes the spyware will just annoy you with pop-up ads but other times it may actually be out to steal personal and financial information about you!

So it is best to use a registry cleaner that comes recommended by someone who has used it or knows something about it. The reason I say this, is because even some paid registry cleaners are not trustworthy. However, the bottom line is; it impossible these days to get away without using a registry cleaner periodically.

NTFS stands for New Technology Filing System and is used in most of the newer Windows operating systems. Another characteristic of Windows 2000 is that its registry uses five main filing directories known as hives. Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 also use five hive registries. Another such operating system is the little-known Windows NT. This was the first Windows operating system to use the NTFS filing system. Windows 2000 came shortly after Windows NT.

Ironically Windows ME is newer than Windows 2000. However, Windows ME uses a registry consisting of six hives.  It also uses the older filing system; FAT32. This filing system was used in Windows 95, Windows 98, as well as Windows ME.

So the characteristics of Windows operating systems can be broken down into the filing systems they use in the number of hives that compose their registries. Those operating systems that use six hive registries also use the FAT 32 filing system. The operating systems that use five-registries use NTFS filing systems. These, generally speaking are the newer operating systems; namely Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7.

The point to all this is: Windows 2000 is not unusual and most registry cleaners that will clean Windows XP will clean Windows 2000. However, you must always be sure the registry cleaner documentation tells you a particular registry cleaner can be used on a particular operating system before you use it. In other words, you can never be sure.

The insides of the Windows 2000 operating system are very similar to the insides of the Windows XP operating system. One of the big differences between Windows XP and Windows 2000 is that Windows XP has many different sub operating systems that sprung off of the main Windows XP operating system itself. In other words, there is Windows XP home, Windows XP professional and several other options to choose from when you are choosing the Windows XP operating system. For the most part, Windows 2000 comes in two flavors; home and professional.

The Windows 2000 registry, like any other Windows registry, has a tendency to corrupt over time and when it does the computer the operating system is installed on will lose its edge. Sometimes corruption in the registry can cause the computer to become very slow.

The older Windows operating systems, namely Windows 95, Windows 98 and ME all used registries that were split into six different main hives. In fact, as hard as it may be to believe there are still registry cleaners, some of them highly renowned, that will only clean registries in operating systems as new as Windows XP. Obviously, the companies that designed these registry cleaners are way behind the times!

Whether the registry cleaner says it is Windows 7 certified or Windows 7 ready; it really doesn’t matter. Ready or certified really mean the same thing. They mean the internals of the software program will do the job of ridding your Windows 7 registry of corruption and duplicate files and they will add files that are missing from your registry.

One final point is the fact Windows 7 is as prone to collecting registry corruption as any other Windows operating system. Just because it’s newer doesn’t mean that registry corruption is any less of a problem to it. Yes, there has been many improvements made and Windows 7. However, its registry still does collect corruption so it is very important to keep it cleaned out with a good registry cleaner. If you don’t clean the corruption every once in a while, the computer will start become slow and may give erratic error messages and even crash on occasion.

For instance, it was next to impossible to get a Windows 95 driven computer to hook up to a network. Since Windows XP was released, our PC’s hook up to any network available without hardly any effort on our part. The reason Windows 95 was network unfriendly didn’t have anything to do with networking technology not being available because it was available.

However, broadband was not readily available in the Windows 95 days. So, the improvement that made Windows easy to marry with a network was born of the fact technology outside the computer forced the issue. What a wonderful development, by the way! Could you imagine using a dial up internet connection these days!?! Ouch!

However, most improvements to our operating systems have come about because our computers have become more powerful. Back in the Windows 95 era, we were saddled by the fact 1GB hard drives and 32MB of RAM were the best we could expect our computers to be supplied with. So, many advancements were made to Windows through the years so we can now take advantage of the fact Terabyte hard drives and chip sets that address 4GB of RAM are at our beck and call. In other words, we now have great technology available; we might as well use it.

Word Pad – A Real Word Processor

Some of Windows 7 improvements have come sort of unexpectedly. For instance, Win7′s version of Word Pad is able to open up .doc files. So, for our more mundane tasks, Word 2007 is unneeded. Another interesting feature that is included in the latest operating system is the snipping tool. With this tool, it is very easy to capture any screenshot and save it as a jpg to the hard drive.

Windows 7 has even updated the calculator. Now using the calculator one can even see the inches in millimeters and the gallons also can be converted into cubic centimeters. Another feature that has been introduced is the open Windows command prompt. It is kind of a techie thing but it is convenient that you can now open a command prompt to any folder by right clicking that folder and choosing “Open command window here.”

Many people might not really love all these new additional features that have been added in Windows 7. However, every new addition does add a little ease to which you can do your everyday tasks. There are no really earth shattering changes contained in Windows 7, just a few things that may make our computing lives easier. For my money that is well worth the upgrade. It has been said many times, it is the little things that matter most. If this is true, Windows 7 is the best operating yet!

Windows 98 registries, and Windows 95 and Windows ME registries for that matter, use a registry system that consists of six main parts. Main parts of registries are referred to as registry “hives.” Windows 2000, 2003, XP, Vista and Seven all use registries they consist of five hives. Therefore, you can see these Windows registries are more like each other then they are similar to Windows 95, 98 and ME. So, you can see there may be some registry cleaners that will not be capable of jumping over the line, so to speak, to clean Win 98 registries when they are compliant with five hive registries.  However, many registry cleaners are capable of cleaning both six and five hive registries.

Back when Windows 95 and 98 ruled the computing world, registry cleaners were not available. Therefore cleaning the registry was an arduous task. Many times, computers would just continue to get slower and slower until they were replaced simply because there was no easy way to clear out registry problems. Registry problems are very common and creep up in all Windows operating systems, even if the computer is very well cared for. In other words, Windows registry problems are just a way of life and always have been.

The bottom line is; if you have an older computer that has Windows 98 and it isn’t running so well you may not be out of luck. Possibly, all you will have to do is install a registry cleaner on the computer and you will bring it back to life again. However beware, computers with Windows 98 installed are usually, absolutely prehistoric. In other words, they usually have an early Pentium microprocessor or possibly a Pentium II with a 2.2 GHz hard drive and 128K of RAM. They may run, or should we say crawl at about 300 MHz of speed. Therefore, a Windows 98 computer system running to all as potential will probably not be what you would be used to if you have been using a computer less than three years old.

Still, a PC with Windows 98 installed, though it may be considered a real dinosaur, can be useful and certainly it will bring back memories. Aside from that, why throw it out when it may be a $30 registry cleaner will revamp it entirely.

The Internet Stall

The first type of internet freeze is really more of an internet stall. This is true because when it occurs, if left alone, it unfreezes itself. If the operating system you’re using is Windows XP or Vista, they usually do a great job at allocating the perfect amount of space. However, with an older OS, you may need to choose an amount on your own. 100MB will usually do the trick.

Sometimes you will notice, particularly in an older computer, even if it is using XP or Vista, the amount of space allocated is more than the amount recommended. When this happens, it is time to click on the button that says “Disk Cleanup.”

True Internet Freezes

The other kind of internet freeze is actually a true computer freeze. It is just that it happens when you are surfing the net. The difference between a true freeze and a temporary internet freeze is the only way to fix a true freeze is to shut off the computer and start it up again.

True computer freezes occur because of corruption in the registry. If the only time the computer freezes is when you are online, this simply means the part of the registry that is corrupt is being addressed when you are online. When you are not online, your operating system isn’t venturing into the corrupted area.

The best way to beat registry corruption and prevent more from developing is to use a registry cleaner regularly. Generally speaking, a registry that has corruption causes the computer to run slow compared to a computer with a clean registry. The internal registry utility which is built into Windows XP is Regedit.  It is accessed through the “run” command.  Windows Vista has the same tool but it accessed in a different manner.  It is not recommended anyone use the Regedit utility because if a wrong entry were made into it, the computer could fail altogether.  Regedit use to be all a technician or anybody else had in order to get into the registry and repair any problems inside it.  Since this was prior to the advent of registry cleaners Regedit was the only tool we had to try to repair our failing registries , so sometimes we had no choice but to use it.

In a very simplified sense, registry corruption is nothing more than pointers that leads to either the wrong place or no place at all.  With the older smaller operating systems the amount of time it took to carry out a few false operations was negligible.

I estimate a registry cleaner would, indeed, solve a runtime error 90 to 95% of the time.  However, be aware of the great deceiver, malware.  Since malware invades registries it can cause the registry to corrupt in such a way it would be prone to runtime errors.  In this case, a regisatry cleaner would cure the registry problem but in a short time the malware would corrupt the registry again causing the runtime error to raise its ugly head once more.

To be sure you fix this error, make sure your virus cleaner is capable of areesting all malware. Most virus cleaners are not.  So, you may have to run  a top notch spyware cleaner such as antispyware plus.  Then after you are sure you are malware free, run the registry cleaner.

Usually, the XP running slow problem stems from corruption in the registry.  It is not abuse responsible for this corruption.  Registry corruption is virtually unavoidable.  So, the only thing a computer owner can do is use a registry cleaner regularly.  This should be done after a virus and spyware scan, but not necessarily  after every virus/spyware scan.  Usually, you can get away with using a registry cleaner weekly.

For what it is worth, Windows XP home seems to corrupt more quickly than XP Professional.  Though Windows Vista’s registry corrupts more slowly than XP’s, it will develop registry corruption, it is just a matter of time.
