Usually, the XP running slow problem stems from corruption in the registry.  It is not abuse responsible for this corruption.  Registry corruption is virtually unavoidable.  So, the only thing a computer owner can do is use a registry cleaner regularly.  This should be done after a virus and spyware scan, but not necessarily  after every virus/spyware scan.  Usually, you can get away with using a registry cleaner weekly.

For what it is worth, Windows XP home seems to corrupt more quickly than XP Professional.  Though Windows Vista’s registry corrupts more slowly than XP’s, it will develop registry corruption, it is just a matter of time.
